Microsoft 365 Copilot practical introductory training

The Microsoft 365 Copilot practical introductory course gives an overview of six core ways people interact with AI and use it in their work: content creation, research, ideation and strategy, data analysis, coding and automation. We go through all six use cases and, under the trainer’s guidance, solve work tasks related to them. The trainer adjusts how deeply the topics are covered to the group’s experience and needs. Explanations and examples alternate with guided exercises and discussions. Participants check the results and improve their prompts based on the feedback they receive. The six use cases are based on the core components of AI use cases described in OpenAI’s guide “Identifying and scaling AI use cases in organizations” (source).

This 6-academic-hour course produces an improved work text, an email draft, an analysis of a sample table, a meeting memo and a simple interactive dashboard. You research a chosen topic in depth with Copilot and check the key claims in the information you find against the original sources. You draw up an action plan for solving one work problem. To automate a recurring task, you write down the input information it needs, the desired result and the steps that require human review.

  • Length 6 academic hours · 270 minutes of instruction
  • Format Online / On-site
  • Level Beginner
  • Group Unlimited online, up to 40 on-site
  • Audience The course suits office workers who are starting to use AI or have so far tried it only occasionally. No previous experience with AI or programming is needed. If the group is made up of people in one job role, we tailor all the examples to that role and its tasks. For a mixed group, we use more general examples suited to different office workers.
  • Materials Participants receive a workbook, sample files and exercise instructions. During the course, the exercises are done under the trainer’s guidance. After the course, you can use the workbook to refine your prompts and your dashboard and to try scheduling a recurring task. Independent work after the course is not included in the stated course volume.

    • We relate the six use cases to office work.
    • We explain the risk of AI making mistakes, the impact of the licence and user permissions, and the limits on how data may be used.
    • The trainer shows the Work IQ option for turning the use of work data on or off.
    • The participant picks one task from their own work and assesses what information may be used to complete it.
    • The participant adds a goal, background information, a source and the desired format of the response to the task, and directs Copilot to ask for missing information.
    • We gather the prompt and the sample materials in a personal project (Projects).
    • The trainer distinguishes between Chat and Cowork and shows how a shared workspace (Workspaces) can be used.
    • The participant tidies up a sample document in Word and, based on it, drafts an email in Outlook.
    • We check that the facts are preserved and that the text suits its reader, and refine the prompts.
    • The trainer also shows how to create an initial outline for a PowerPoint presentation.
    • The participant formulates a research question and compares information found on the web or in accessible work files.
    • We check how up to date the sources are and verify the key claims in the answer against the original sources.
    • While a longer research task runs, we continue with other exercises.
    • Participants have Copilot suggest solutions to a work problem and point out their weak points.
    • We compare the options against chosen criteria and draw up an action plan for a feasible solution.
    • The participant analyses a sample table in Excel, asks a question about the data, writes or explains a formula and creates a chart.
    • We check one calculation and assess whether the data supports the conclusion drawn from it.
    • The participant writes a memo from a sample transcript and compares it with the original text.
    • We distinguish decisions from proposals and note where an owner or a deadline was not stated.
    • We explain the impact of transcription and meeting permissions.
    • The participant builds a simple interactive dashboard from sample data in Copilot Pages and modifies it using plain language.
    • We check whether the chart is suitable and whether the figures match the source data.
    • No code is written by hand; the dashboard uses the data from a provided file.
    • The trainer shows the role of plugins, reusable work instructions and scheduled Cowork tasks.
    • The participant saves their best prompt and, for one recurring task, describes when it runs, its input information, its result and the steps that require human review.
    • The result is an automation brief; the technical setup of the workflow is left as further practice.

Learning outcomes

What you'll be able to do:

  1. use Copilot to write a text suited to your work, give it the background information it needs and have it ask clarifying questions about missing information;

  2. research a chosen topic in depth with Copilot and check the key claims in the information you find against the original sources;

  3. compare the solutions Copilot suggests against chosen criteria and draw up an action plan;

  4. analyse a sample table with Copilot and check the calculation the conclusion is based on;

  5. build a simple interactive dashboard from sample data and modify it using plain language;

  6. describe how a recurring work task could be automated and identify the steps that require human review.

Good to know

Before the training

Scope of the training

The course gives you the skills to start using AI in your everyday work. We practise coding using a simple interactive dashboard as an example; Copilot’s Code is not taught separately. Creating agents and plugins, integrating company systems, developing production-ready applications and automating end-to-end processes require separate training or development work.

Duration and format

Six academic hours equal 270 minutes of instruction. Breaks are added on top of this time. The course can be held online or on site; on-site teaching lets the trainer guide participants’ practice more directly. The course is taught in Estonian or English.

Prerequisites

Every participant needs a computer with an internet connection. The required apps and add-ins must be set up before the course. Hands-on participation requires a Microsoft 365 work or school account permitted in the organisation and a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence that gives access to the apps used in the course. Copilot must be ready to use in Word, Outlook, Excel and Teams. We prepare sample files in OneDrive or SharePoint and a sample Teams transcript. We check with the client before the course that Projects, Workspaces, Cowork and Copilot Pages are available and that code preview is enabled. If a feature is missing, we agree on a suitable alternative exercise and clarify the learning outcome. For practice, we use sample data or materials agreed with the client.
